Thanks to Earn & Learn East Bay, we had the opportunity to host a paid intern this summer from Skyline High School. Earn & Learn’s mission is to bring together learners and employers to diversify the workforce. This program matched hundreds of businesses and youth together to provide meaningful internship opportunities.
Our design intern Angel Viguerias came highly recommended by Rachel Kantor, his Design teacher at Skyline. Rachel told us that despite her class being focused on graphic design this year, they did not have enough computers available for student to become adept at digital art. She said that Angel is a very passionate artist with great potential in his drawing abilities and was enthusiastic about joining us this summer. We decided to focus the on teaching Angel the latest programs for graphic design, using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to enhance his drawings. We also taught him about using art to convey concepts that resonates with the Oaklandish audience. We had Angel on our team for about four weeks and showed him as much as we could. And Angel gave us advice on what the kids are wearing these days. Our whole team really enjoyed having him here!
Here’s a little more from our summer design intern Angel Viguerias, recapping his overall experience at Oaklandish:
“Thanks for your help and support and patience which I know must have been hard because I didn’t know anything about design and also because you guys were doing an important project. Thank you for doing your best to include me in one of your projects and teaching me Photoshop and other art tools you use.
I also would like to thank everyone for all of the clothing you gave me on our last day. I didn’t need that much but thank y'all 1000%.”
Here's some art that Angel made using Photoshop and Illustrator:
